The Philippines Doesn't Need More Lawyers

Pia Cayetano always reminding us, when she has the chance, that she's a lawyer. 😂

If you're trying to wield that like a weapon, remember that an experienced professional chef has professional knife skills as well. He or she can use those skills to scale and fillet a fish, or debone a fowl, or peel off the hide of some game animal -- or choose to slit another person's throat.

You're a lawyer and senator, but you chose to use your skills, privilege, and experience to protect someone who misused her confidential funds; someone who regularly abused her power as both the vice president and education secretary (and as mayor of Davao City before that); and someone who (more recently) threatened the president of the republic and his wife, plus the former speaker of the House (I don't like any of them, but that's irrelevant in this case), and (several years ago -- but still) beat up a court sheriff who was just doing his job? And by the way, the person who did all that is also a lawyer, and apparently scored 80% in the bar exam (which I take with a copious amount of salt, by the way, but that's another story).

I'd say the country needs more teachers and scientists, artists and medical professionals, and writers and farmers, than lawyers -- if we are to go by how the law has been weaponized through the years in defense of those in power instead of the defenseless and powerless.

But Pia Cayetano -- as much as I loathe her and her sibling, who is also a lawyer -- is at least brandishing her "lawyerhood' because it's a badge of honor for her (no matter that it's misused); and however you spin it, it takes years and years of study and sacrifice and actual brain cells to BECOME a lawyer.

Senator Robinhood Padilla, on the other hand... 🤦 🤡
