Let's give comic books, and the movies that are based on them, a fair shake


I grew up on Pinoy Komiks and both DC and Marvel comic books.There are well-written comics, and there are badly written comics. Just like there are badly written novels. And badly written poetry. There are well-made movies that are based on comic books and graphic novels, just as there are badly made "arthouse" films. 

I love Stephen King's work. The guy is a great novelist, period. Sure he writes horror, and he's also a great horror writer, but he's a great writer -- period. Some "literary" writers who take themselves and their work too seriously have labelled him a hack, which is unfair. Some "arthouse" film directors and critics have decided that comic book movies -- even the well-written ones -- are a steaming pile of cow dung, which is unfair. Oh well, whatever makes them sleep better at night.

Burning Bridges With Your Idols

  These authors are some of the people I idolized growing up. As a kid I was small, frail, and unathletic, and I preferred to stay indoors and read books and comics rather than play sports (that came much, much later, when I could actually hold my own physically at basketball [as a Filipino, you're expected to play basketball, no questions asked] against other boys [boys who were still bigger and stronger than me, but hey, at some point you have to try, right?]). Still No to the Death Penalty

This knee-jerk clamor for bringing back the death penalty to punish plunderers and corrupt government officials is putting the cart before the horse. FIRST, let's make sure that the guilty ones go to jail and not get away scot-free, especially the ones who can buy their freedom using not just money but also power and privilege -- the Eraps, the Jinggoys, the Arroyos, the Bong Revillas, the Imeldas. ONLY THEN can we think about bringing back capital punishment. (Better yet, make an example of that jet-setting daughter of the dirty old man in the Hague, who spent her confidential funds faster than the Discayas could amass a fleet of luxury cars.) Otherwise, the only ones hanging from that noose are, again, the poor and the powerless -- regardless of whether they are guilty or not.
